Sprint from San Diego to Houston

Race to Houston_0By the Long Haired One…

Day 1 (450 miles)
We left San Diego on Sunday the 23rd of November. We only had 4 days to reach Houston TX, which is roughly 1300 miles a away. Since we planned to spend Thanksgiving with our best friends Joe and Amy, we had to be in Houston by Wednesday. Now most people – especially first time RV’ers – would first go on a short (2-day) “training” road trip to make sure everything works the way it should and at the same time gain some much required experience on the mechanics involved when pulling and parking an RV. But alas, we simply didn’t have enough time. So when the day came to leave, we were both nervous and excited about the  proverbial road ahead.

The “bull” behaved like a true champion. Never complained and gave his best in the mountains – which Arizona had more than enough off. By the time we reached New Mexico, the wind was giving both the truck and driver quite the uphill battle. Thankfully that was the only real stressful part of the day. We reached our very first campground, Heartland 1 RV Park in Casa Grande, AZ, around 5:00 pm. Settling in took about 15 min – not bad for the first day.

Day 2 (423 miles)
The target for today was El Paso, TX. Again, most people would plan such a trip months in advance and make sure the necessary campground reservations (for each State), but not us. We simply decided to research a few campgrounds he night before and then call for reservations the next day while on the road.20141125_165823

Today’s route was relatively uneventful except for one “small” deviation – the Long Haired One actually took over for a few hours and did a pretty decent job of pulling the trailer. We arrived in the Mission RV campgrounds in El Paso just before sunset and still had time to cook a few steaks on the barbecue.

Day 3 (518 miles)
It would have been nice to push through to Houston today, but we decided against it since we only left El Paso around 10:15 am. We pushed hard and eventually reached our destination. If this leg of the trip was in California, it would not have been possible, but since the speed limit, for most of the day, was 75 mph, we reached Boerne by 6:00 pm that night. Needless to say the higher speed hammered our mileage and the Bull slurped diesel at a rate of 7.5 mpg all the way.

Day 4 (224 miles)
Finally there’s light at the end of the tunnel. After today, four days for relaxing with friends (really family) await us
